English term

Mackinaw

English Tech/Engineering Food & Drink Hopfenanbau
Still about hops.

Michigan farmers have planted two varieties developed at Great Lake Hops in southern Michigan, which propagates hop plants and ships them to farmers across the country. Lynn Kemme, who did the breeding, calls one Mackinaw (“A party in your mouth, like going to Mackinaw”) and the other Michigan Copper.

I found the following link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mackinaw_City,_Michigan

But I have no idea what “A party in your mouth, like going to Mackinaw” could possibly mean.
Any Americans from Michigan out there? Or someone who understands the meaning?

I'll post the same question under EN>DE.

TIA

Edith It's all part of the same thing, apparently. To get to Mackinac Island you have to take a ferry from Mackinaw City:

Even if Mackinaw and Mackinac are pronounced the same, I doubt a person from Michigan would get the spelling wrong. But Sara's probably right: it probably refers to the whole area, with its various attractions.

Charles thanks, so it is indeed the city and not the island. I'll have to think of something suitable.

It also hosts the "Annual Hopps Of Fun Beer & Wine Festival".

"City" Permanent population: 806 [sic] (in 2010), but "the population surges during the summer tourist season" (ibid.).

"According to AAA's 2009 TripTik requests, Mackinaw City is the most popular tourist city in the state of Michigan."

Both are pronounced the same Both Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island exist, and both are pronounced Mackinaw. My guess is that your text refers to the Mackinaw area.

Sara my text reads Makina"w", your link says Mackina"c". Is this just another spelling for one and the same island?
Edith Kelly (asker) Jan 13, 2015:
Sara thanks. I did not find Mackinaw Island, thought it was just a town. So it's a tourist attraction, a wonderful island. So I can just adapt/localise and use the name of a beautiful spot German readers are familiar with?

Two different places These seem to be two different places - compare your link with Edith's:

Mackinaw Island It's a resort area in Upper Michigan. Used to go there as a child with my family! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mackinac_Island
