English term

waffle-y

Non-PRO English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters waffle-y
A Waffle Seal makes its way to the sea. Its rough, waffle-y belly helps it climb the iceberg. Then it flips over and uses its slippery backside to slide.

The subject is sarcastic a bit. But it is real seal.

Thanks in advance,

Discussion

It is simply a crawling seal and someone commenting on his movements.
philgoddard Jul 10, 2020:
Don't you want to answer my questions? The second was just curiosity, but the first is essential context.
S.J (asker) Jul 10, 2020:
It is kids series.
philgoddard Jul 9, 2020:
There's no such thing as a waffle seal, so I'm guessing this is a joke. Could you give us the surrounding text, please?

I'm also intrigued to know what you're translating, since it generates so many interesting questions!

highly frictional

The highly frictional belly prevents the seal from sliding back down when climbing.

waffle-y: textured like a waffle, not smooth.
Note from asker:
Good one. Because the material is about slippy and grippy situation.

waffly

I guess 'waffle-y' is the adjective form of 'waffle' but its correct spelling is 'waffly'.

Thank you!
neutral Yvonne Gallagher : how does this explain or "translate" the word asked? And "waffle-y" is a particular way of spelling that is OK and means "like a waffle"/it's fictional

You're rıght but I couldn't find anything about "Waffle Seal." This is just a guess from me.

If we are talking about roughly parallel ridges and furrows

honeycomb or granular grip

waffles are a honeycomb design and a lot of non-slip materials are made with a honeycomb design. So I think this keeps the waffle-y image

Yes, the iceberg is slippy so it needs an adhesive grip to climb up it. Friction impedes movement so that would make it even more difficult to climb

you could also just say (rough) adhesive, sticky or tacky belly

https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/tacky
If something such as paint or glue is tacky, it is slightly sticky and not yet dry

if this is intended for kids you could use something as simple as "sticky" (especially if they don't know what waffles are)
