It means the total amount of XXX taken during the patient's life up to the time a cardiac event occurred.

Comment: "The timespan is in years, so this clearly seems to be the case. Thanks everybody, esp.dr. Giuli who deserves points, too - I just don't have more to spare."

the average span of time the drug is currently still active in the system when there is a regular intake of the said drug.

: it refers to de cumulative dose, not to the time the drug stays active in circulation. the enphasis is on the build up of the drug in the body because it is toxic to the heart (wrong end of the stick)

: lifetime in this case is the time the drug is active. drugs can have a half-life etc. This is important to be able to adjust doses and avoid overdoses.

useful example supporting David's comment
"According to criteria laid out in the FDA’s approval of Novantrone for MS, the drug should only be used in those with normal cardiac function, once every three months at a dose of 12mg/m2. The lifetime cumulative dose is limited to 140 mg/m2. For most, this would mean that after about 8 to 12 doses over 2 to 3 years, no more drug should be taken...."

: I rest my case, that the enphasis is on the drug as it builds up and that is what is measuredm, NOT how long it stays active in circuation.

absolutely:the total quantity that has been taken in a lifetime,so far(or that should be taken in a whole lifetime) - it is different from(although easy to confuse with) the 'half-life of a substance'etc(median being the mid-value of a sample)
