Finnish term

merkitysmaailma

Finnish to English Social Sciences Psychology Child development
Konteksti: lapsen kehityksen myötä hänen merkitysmaailmansa laajenee. Tämä on minulle uusi termi, enkä keksi käännökseksi muuta kuin 'terms of reference'. Olisko kellään hyvää psykon sanakirjaa? Tai tietäisi muuten vaan?

Discussion

Correction! A helpful colleague pointed out that 'lifeworld' in Finnish is 'elamismaailma'. This is turning into a migraine situation... So, the candidates for 'merkitysmaailma' are: semiotic awareness, semiotic world, world of meanings. Unless anyone elso knows better?

Lifeworld? Hi, Desmond,
I think that the term is 'lifeworld', as coined by the founder of phenomenology, Husserl. It seems to be used in educational (and other) contexts as well as philosophy, so it's obviously been adopted by other disciplines, and H's name is connected to 'merkitysmaailma' in some Finnish articles. It's a nice term actually, easy to understand in both languages. I came across it via googling on your suggestion, semiotic awareness, so many thanks!

Annira, instead of \"semiotic awareness\", another phrase you might use is \"semiotic perception\". It can be found used in a literary context at:
www.yorku.ca/inpar/inpar001_smith-wasserman.pdf. I think \"awareness\" is still the better choice where a child\'s development is concerned.
