Discussion

Damian Harrison (X) Sep 23, 2010:
Quite agree with Bernhard. A bit more context (the entire, unabridged sentence, for instance) would have been helpful. Looking at their website I am inclined to think that they do intend something more along the lines of innovation / pushing boundaries etc...
Bernhard Sulzer Sep 23, 2010:
thoughts In this case, I would ask the client if they indeed mean this as a contrast to their traditional work/art services in their gallery and other galleries (exhibitions) - as in we go beyond organizing our traditional exhibitions and promote/are actively pursuing the dissemination of and discourse about art on an international level. I believe it could mean that, and it would make sense to say that in order to introduce the venture of the curators as an "international" one. But in German, it could possibly also imply/mean "work/efforts way beyond traditional art services" ("über die Grenzen"). The way it is worded makes it a bit difficult to grasp what they are trying to say. Although, "über die (alle) Grenzen 'hinweg'" is mostly used to denote "across borders, internationally." :)

See explanation:

From the information provided I would assume the authors intend something similar to the following:

"The XYZ Gallery promotes the arts and artistic discourse by encouraging debate at an international level."

Thanks!
agree Bernhard Sulzer : A contrast between traditional promotion of art in galleries and "über die Grenzen hinaus". I do think they want to express international promotion - but it's a bit unclear. see: http://www.huber-treff.de/kunsthandlung/2-0-Galerie.html

Thanks!
agree Stephen Reader : A hybrid of this & Haley's (or your alternative) would cover the ambiguity of the original? Elegant, either way.

supports the dissemination of and discourse on art transgressing the boundaries

...gives (considerable) support in the dissemination of and discourse on art cutting across the boundaries

........ that go beyond the boundaries

push the boundaries

The art gallery pushes the boundaries of art education and art discourse as well.
Peer comment(s):

agree Stephen Reader : Link with Damian, and surely the ambiguities of the original statement'd be covered? - '...& art discourse, at an international level'. O/wise, worth asking client "welche Grenzen?".
