German term

Schwarzteile

German to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks
This appears in a list of outsourced automotive production departments as "Schwarzteilelackiererei " It is directly below Kleinteile- / Kunststofflackiererei. What is a Schwarzteil? Could it be a carbon-dipped part?

Discussion

Björn Vrooman Jun 23, 2016:
@Lois Here you got a body shop painting brake calipers:
http://wrapbullys.com/brake-caliper-painting/

And here you got a discussion about painting a transmission:
http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-84741.html

Quote:
"OEMs and their suppliers are under very strict EPA regualtions [sic] as far as solvent and paint emissions are concerned, they are not going to paint anything they don't have to because their emissions are estimated from their paint consumption."

Some body shops apparently refuse to paint parts like brake calipers because they don't want to take any risks (read: liability).

See also the categories here:
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/cat/Paint & Body Repair/C0...

I have not found a single ENS body shop that says something about "Schwarzteile." You could get away with calling the category "Paint: Brake calipers, engine & more"

Just an idea, but I think you're better off with it. As I said before, the customer needs to know what you're talking about.
Björn Vrooman Jun 22, 2016:
@Alison German link is great. I am just not sure how it correlates with "exterior" black parts.

Your German source:
"grundiert werden und keine weitere Lackierung benötigen"
That's similar to what I found below.

It goes on to list examples:
"Motorinnenraumteile, Bremsscheibenabdeckungen oder Stirnwände"
A "Stirnwand" is under the hood.

As Lois said:
"It is directly below Kleinteile- / Kunststofflackiererei."
Bumpers are indeed Kunststoff, but they're plastic and black usually.

You sure we're not talking about parts treated with primer and primer sealer?

Just an example:
Coating Category VOC Content (Lbs/Gal)
Pretreatment Wash Primer 6.5
Primer/Primer Surfacer 4.8
Primer Sealer 4.6
Single/2-Stage Topcoat 5.0
Topcoats of 3 or More Stages 5.2
Multi-Colored Topcoat 5.7
Specialty Coatings 7.0
http://www.sbdcnet.org/small-business-research-reports/paint...

Most important thing is whether any UK or US customer will know what he or she can expect.

Without more info, I think it's difficult. But I don't believe ENS car owners will know what "black parts" refers to.
Alison MacG Jun 22, 2016:
Possible origin of the term? Exterior "black" parts added to the "body in white"?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_in_white
https://www.thyssenkrupp.com/de/newsroom/pressemeldungen/pre...
Prospects for this material are brightest in the manufacture of add-on parts, for which present priming procedures are costly but no additional painting is required. Often referred to as black parts, these components include engine compartment parts, brake disc covers and dash panels.
https://www.thyssenkrupp.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/pres...
The passenger compartment of the i3 is made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) body-in-white on which plastic add-on parts are mounted.
http://www.automotive.basf.com/challenge-coating-new-bmw-i3/
The add-on parts like doors, trunk lid, and fenders complement the body-in-white (link to follow)
Björn Vrooman Jun 22, 2016:
I could support that notion, unless Lois can provide any more context.

The reason why I think they mean "unbehandelt" here (see below): The difference between Kunststofflackiererei and Schwarzteillackierei. One or two of the links I gave below discuss the benefits and drawbacks of painting Schwarzteile.

I think one link puts some of the Schwarzteile in the black plastic parts category (where they shouldn't be according to Lois's website), so it may just be the powertrain, etc., meaning the parts that are usually not painted in the same way as the chassis.

Maybe, maybe not. You'd have to see the pictures on the site/in the document.
Jonathan MacKerron Jun 22, 2016:
check out "coated black parts" "Schwarzteilelackiererei " is in no way a standard term, garnering only a few ghits, so I think your translation can be accordingly vague, as long as it expresses the underlying idea.
Björn Vrooman Jun 22, 2016:
@Jonathan Base coating is the step before top coating. You don't stop halfway through the process.

On a side note:
"In der Kataphorese werden dabei die Schwarzteile vor Korrosion und der sogenannten Unterrostung, dem Wandern von Rost unterhalb einer Beschichtung, geschützt."

That's from your link and refers to the primer or undercoating: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primer_(paint)
http://www.hacheyautoenhancing.com/undercoating

Unfortunately, car manufacturer translations are not very thorough. You should see BMW's documentation...
Jonathan MacKerron Jun 22, 2016:
@Lois Appears to mean different things in different contexts. Here they call them "black parts" in the English translation.
http://www.kropf-solutions.com/en/transparent-visualization/
They also refer to "base coating", so that is perhaps what is meant here, and not particularly the parts themselves.
Björn Vrooman Jun 22, 2016:
Finally, from a list of classifications:
"Fertigungstiefe
 Lackiert
 Beflockt
 Lackiert und beflockt
 Galvanisiert
 Unbehandelt (Schwarzteil)"
https://erfx.magna.com/ngastras/core/master/de/data/Classifi...

Just as I thought.
Björn Vrooman Jun 22, 2016:
@Jonathan and Lois Maybe that'll help you:
"Diese Sonderausstattung (Schlüsselnummer 56.8) hatte laut BMW Motorrad Ausstattungskatalog die Bezeichnung "Schwarzteile Motor und Fahrwerk" und umfasste: Längslenker, Generatorträgerdeckel, Kurbelgehäuse links/rechts, Getriebe, Ölkühlerleitung und Anlasserdeckel."
http://www.gs-forum.eu/r-1150-gs-und-r-1150-gs-adventure-93/...

"Alles gestrahlt und neu Lackiert (Schwarzteile/Farbteile)"
http://www.simson-moped-forum.de/topic.php?t=17353

"Bei deinem Elch ist es lackiert -> empfindlich
Bei der Brabus-Nachrüst-Bastelblende kann die Blende aus einem anderen Material/Lack sein -> weniger empfindlich
Beim Mazda ist es ein Schwarzteil -> die kann man sehr temperaturresistent machen (bis zu 250°C, wenn man viel Geld reinhängt, so heiss wird manches Endrohr nicht."
http://www.elchfans.de/threads/brabus-auspuff-w169-aufgepass...

In essence: The part is black, but it's the non-painted one. I'm afraid I can't agree with the answer given, since that is "Schwarzteil-Lackierung" and the document seems to translate "Schwarzteile" with "parts" only.
Lois Ring (asker) Jun 22, 2016:
I didn't think so. Naturally googling turns up many hits for "black parts" in connection with car, but this is a whole specialist department. I now think they are small parts that are not usually seen, but still cannot find a suitable English term or comparable department.
Jonathan MacKerron Jun 22, 2016:
Aren't they simply parts that have been painted/lacquered/coated black??
"black parts" googles well in connection with "automobiles"

black parts

A literal translation works fine, and I don't see the need to go hunting for synonyms.
Example sentence:

We are also using recycled materials for interior parts, where it can be much more challenging to achieve the necessary appearance and performance than using recycled materials for underbody, subsurface and exterior *black parts*.
