Hi guys,

Just struggling to get a picture of what's going on here:

"Über ein Thermostat wurde der Ölkreislauf unterhalb von 80° C kurzgeschlossen und der Aluminium-Ölkühler umgangen."

kurzgeschlossen/kurzschließen -> often translated as 'bypassed' or 'short-circuited' etc.

Any help appreciated!

It's not great in German, but it works better than in English. I suggested to think of it as "hot-wire" because that is basically what's happening and why Lancashireman's statement still stands:
"'the Ölkreislauf (oil circulation) was bypassed', which is clearly nonsense"

In other words: If you hot-wire a car (read: oil circuit), you're bypassing the ignition system (read: cooling unit). You're not bypassing the car--well, you better be doing that if it's mine!

Components to create a bypass (Kurzschluss) can be added during construction, but the source text is clearly describing the operation. Also, I have not seen any 'kurzschließen' that means 'to bypass'. Sounds like someone was trying to 'verb' a noun. The 'kurzgeschlossen' here is probably simply 'enclosed in a shorter circuit' (what is made when a car is hot-wired). So, in plain English: When under 80 deg, the oil circulating is cycled in a circuit that does not include the aluminum oil cooler.

@herbalchemist I think the second one is off; it's one of the main reasons why "bypass" doesn't work.

I used to watch a lot of Star Trek and all they ever did was "bypassing" something, but they bypassed affected systems, not circuits, loops or such. That makes no sense or may imply there's a second, entirely separate "circuit" installed for precisely that reason. That may be an emergency fail safe, but it isn't called a "bypass."

In this context, there really isn't a second "loop" anyway. It's just a "hot-wired" connection, as you might say with cars. You could use "reroute" instead of "redirected":

Oil at temperatures below 80 °C is rerouted by the thermostat, bypassing the aluminum cooler.

Side notes
It's "aluminium" in BrE; Celsius spacing as per NIST guidelines, but others may apply.

In this overall coolant circuit, a main circuit and a short circuit are constructed. The main and short circuits are switched as a function of the operating temperature of the coolant by a thermostatic valve. This is a more idiomatic English construct: "Bypass mode: When the coolant inlet temperature is less than 85°C (185°F) the circulating thermostat is closed. The coolant circulates in the engine and coolant can flow through the vehicle heating system."

There's nothing wrong with the German, though; "kurzschließen" means "kürzerer Kreislauf" here (which is not "bypass") and "umgangen" is bypass.

bypassed There seems to be confusion on what bypassing is. It does not mean 'passed by'. More like 'flowing past' (ignoring). When under 80 degrees, the circulating oil bypasses the cooling unit. E.g. "The standard oil circuit was (or is) by-passed by the thermostat below a temperature of 80 °C and the oil radiator (oil cooler) has been (or is) circumvented".

Note: Even the German text implies "bypassing the circuit", this isn’t correct. Only the radiator is by-passed. So you may replace "oil circuit" by "radiator" as well.

bypass As you are talking about the oil circuit, I suggest you use bypass. Short circuits, in my experience, come up regarding electrical systems and, while the meaning is the same in the broad sense, I would still advocate for bypass.

Definitely not short-circuit, for the electrifying reason stated by jccantrell. In fact, best not to mention circuit of any kind (=circulation).

'wurde' (past tense) presumably because this is how it was designed/constructed, but present tense in EN because it refers to continuing functionality.

Bei einem elektrischen Kurzschluss wird der Verbraucher mit hohem Widerstand durch eine leitende Verbindung mit sehr niedrigem Widerstand überbrückt und die Generatorspannung treibt einen extrem hohen Strom durch die Zuleitungen, der diese in kurzer Zeit zerstört, wenn der Kurzschlussstrom nicht durch Sicherungen oder Schutzschalter unterbrochen wird.

Andererseits beim Ölkreislauf. Wenn der Motor noch kalt ist, braucht er nicht gekühlt zu werden. Erst oberhalb von 80 °C muss er durch den Kühler gekühlt werden. Dann öffnet das Thermostatventil, der Bypass ist unterbochen und das Öl fließt stattdessen durch den Kühler. Da in diesem Fall der Ölstrom konstatiert bleibt, sind Schäden wie bei einem Kurzschluss völlig ausgeschlossen. Deshalb sollte man den Bypass auch Bypass nennen und nicht Kurzschuss.

Without a hyphen looks weird to me. E-mail also looked weird to me till I got used to it.

Two American dictionaries, Random House Unabridged, and American Heritage, have by-pass as the listed headword, with the unhyphenated form given as a valid alternate. Cambridge Advanced Learners and WR's own Princeton Word-net do not show the hyphenated form at all.

Anmerkung zur Thermotatfunktion:
Wenn der Thermostat im Bypass (in der Umgehungsleitung) eingebaut ist, muss er bei 80 °C Temperatur schließen (nicht öffnen, wie man aus meinem ersten Beitrag herauslesen könnte).
Wenn er vor dem Kühler eingebaut ist, muss er öffnen. Vermutlich macht er beides gleichzeitig. Öffnet den Weg durch den Kühler und sperrt den Bypass ab.

Historische Kühlwasserthermostate im Kraftfahrzeug enthielten ein Bimetall, heutige Thermostate werden dagegen durch eine im Kühlmittelstrom liegende Kapsel betätigt, die mit einem so genannten Dehnstoff (einem Wachs) gefüllt ist.

insatzthermostate sind einzelne Bauteile, die in einem Gehäuse Thermostatuntergebracht sind. Diese regeln die Kühlmitteltemperatur exakt, sind robust, wartungsfrei und bewähren sich seit Jahrzehnten. Gehäusethermostate bestehen aus dem Einsatz und dem Gehäuse. Diese Module werden voll in den Motor integriert.
Das Herzstück des Wachsthermostates ist das Arbeitselement. Dabei handelt es sich um ein druckfestes Gehäuse. Dieses ist mit einem speziellen Wachs gefüllt. Nach dem Starten des Motors erwärmt die Kühlflüssigkeit das Arbeitselement. Ab einer vorgegebenen Temperatur verflüssigt sich das Wachs im Arbeitselement. Dabei dehnt sich das Wachs aus und drückt in dem Gehäuse auf einen Stift, der als Arbeitskolben dient.
Der Arbeitskolben wird nun aus dem Gehäuse gepresst und öffnet den Kühlmitteldurchfluss zum Kühler über ein Tellerventil. So wird der Motor im optimalen Temperaturbereich gehalten. Unterschreitet das Kühlmittel die vorgegebene Öffnungstemperatur wieder, werden Teller und Stift von einer Feder zurück in die Ausgangsposition gedrückt. Dadurch wird der Kühlmitteldurchfluss zum Kühler unterbrochen.

Bei zu geringer Motortemperatur nach dem Start oder zu geringer Belastung während der Fahrt wird der Thermostat als 2/2-Wegeventil im Kühlmittelkreislauf gebraucht. Er lässt das aus dem Motor ausströmende Kühlmittel nicht durch den Kühler, sondern direkt über eine Kurzschlussleitung wieder zum Motor zurückfließen. Das zweite Bild zeigt das komplette Thermostatgehäuse mit zugehörigem Thermostaten. Es wird häufig zusammen mit Temperaturfühlern und zusätzlichen Anschlüssen (z.B. für die Heizung) zu einem Modul zusammengefasst. Bild 3 zeigt den Thermostaten in seinem Gehäuse.
Die Öffnungstemperatur von Thermostaten wird für das jeweilige Kühlsystem bestimmt. Lagen diese früher eher bei 80°C, so werden heute (2006) 90°C und mehr erreicht. Es gibt auch Motoren mit einem weiteren Kühlkreislauf innen unmittelbar an den Zylindern. Dieser wird durch die gleiche Pumpe angetrieben, hat aber einen zweiten Thermostaten, der erst bei Temperaturen über 100°C öffnet. Dadurch wird hier das Kühlmittel erst umgepumpt, wenn der optimale Betriebspunkt (schneller als sonst) erreicht ist.

üblichen Systemen ab und vermeidet die bei den Schieber-Thermostaten
auftretenden Fehlerquellen durch Verkanten und Hängenbleiben des Schiebers

Bei geöffnetem Kegelventil (Abb.1) drückt das Öl über beide Zuleitungen
gleichzeitig zum Kühler. Druck und Gegendruck heben sich hierbei auf und

Kühler wird also neutralisiert und das Öl fließt innerhalb des Thermostaten zum
Motor zurück.
Ab ca. 75° Celsius beginnt das Kegelventil zu schließen und unterbricht diesen
Stillstand. Bei ca. 80° ist das Kegelventil geschlossen (Abb.2) und das Öl muss
jetzt über den Kühler zurück zum Motor fließen.

Operation
The thermostat bypasses the oil cooler until the fluid reaches the activation temperature. At the activation temperature, the bypass valve begins to close, forcing oil through the cooler and allowing it to cool. External Oil Cooler By-passed on RAT Type 4
The VW engine, both type 1 and type 4, have a so-called "internal cooler" that sits on top of the engine inside of the fan shroud. The flow of oil through that internal cooler is controlled by pressure valve in the bottom of the case. The temperature is controlled by oil pressure: When the oil is cold it is thicker so the valve by-passes the cooler, when it warms up and gets thinner and the oil pressure drops, the valve begins to route oil through the cooler and that's how it maintains a range of oil temp.

1) No definite proposal was given. 2) For "umgangen" Gavin can choose form the lists of synonyms for "by-passed" added to my proposal. 3) The hyphen is useful as it originates from "passed by".

Natürlich muss der Thermostatschalter den Bypass (den Nebenschluss) schließen, damit das Öl den Weg über den Kühler nimmt, der wegen der geringen Querschnitte (um eine große Oberfläche zu haben) einen höheren Widerstand aufweist.
