German term

Frühzykler

German to English Bus/Financial Economics
This is taken from a report on market development: "Als Frühzykler war sie von der Krise besonders getroffen".

From the few mentions I've found on the internet, a "Frühzykler" would appear to be a sector affected first by changes in the economic cycle. But I'm only guessing from context. Does anyone have more information? And a neat way of expressing that concept in English would be quite nice, too.

Thanks in advance...

Jane Luther (asker) Jan 23, 2013:
"sie" = die Branche.
The report is about market development in the automotive sector, the Frühzykler here are the lorry makers.
Edith Kelly Jan 23, 2013:
Kontext wünsche allen fröhliches Rätselraten. Da kann man so keine vernüftige Antwort geben. Vielleicht ein Blümchen, das früh blüht und daher doch noch von den Eisheiligen umgebracht wird?
Steffen Walter Jan 23, 2013:
Context required What does "sie" refer to? A company? An entire industry? And which "market development" is this about more specifically?

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks, this seemed to fit best in the context, although I also found quite a bit of back-up for Tim's early bellwhether. Thanks to everyone for your help."

Another option to consider. See, for example:

“Three schools of thought on the drop in McDonald's (MCD) comparable store sales across the global: 1) The company is executing poorly and is fiddling while Rome is burning. 2) The restaurant chain is an early bellwhether indicating the global economy is in even worse shape than many forecasts. 3) The squeeze play is on with Burger King and Wendy's hitting the market with a premium menu and updated stores, while Panera Bread and Chipotle are stealing consumers willing to trade up.”
