German term

DS-Normmotor

German to English Tech/Engineering Engineering: Industrial
I'm primarily interested in the "DS". Is it DS-Norm, as in DS Standard, or is it "DS standard motor/engine"? In any case, it is from a glossary for a company that specializes in automation, precision and high performance paper processing, plastic welding and lubrication technology. No context, simply a list of terms. I'm not even sure the "DS" stands for German words.

Discussion

Johannes Gleim Mar 25, 2011:
DS may mean "Drehstrom", but we cannot be sure of this, as we have no context. Could you please add more from your list?
Sybille Brückner Mar 24, 2011:
I would say DS could also mean "Drehstrom" (threephase motor). In texts I am translating (for cranes) DS always means Drehstrom
Reinhold Wehrmann Mar 24, 2011:
I forgot to mention that the "D" stands for "Direct", i.e. the motor is coupled directly to the load without an intermediate gearbox. So a DS type motor would be coupled directly to the load and run at synchronous speed.
meirs Mar 24, 2011:
Not "engine" In any case, do not use "engine" in this context - just "motor". Engine is pretty much reserved to internal combustion "motors" (and to railways steam locomotives).

I'm pretty sure DS stands for Drehstrom.

DS Standard Motor

The DS refers to a production series, with the "S" indicating a synchronous motor (as opposed to asynchronous).

Has a DS (and DA) series of motors - that seem to be quite popular in the servo motor industry - they are described as "general purpose" by the manufacturer - hence "Norm" (probably)

agree Johannes Gleim : Dynamic Synchron - Dynamic Asynchron, but does this match the context?
