German term or phrase: Gebrauchswaffe
'Die Ausstellung im ersten Stock geht auf das Jahr 1976 zurück. Ziel der Gestaltung war damals, eine «zeughausartige Atmosphäre» zu schaffen. Dazu wurden über 1000 Griffwaffen (Säbel, Degen und Schwerter), rund 950 Gewehre und knapp 400 Pistolen ausgestellt.
**Gebrauchswaffen** überwiegen, doch darunter finden sich auch wunderbare Einzelstücke'.

Is a Gebrauchswaffe a 'service weapon'?

agree  hazmatgerman (X): Only with the second part, as uniques may also be fully functional though seldom used. Antonym of "functional" is "decoration". Best.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Actually I used "Weapons for everyday use' in the end.. but I'm not 100% convinced though.

agree  hazmatgerman (X): Very probably to distinguish from uniques because mass-produced, in used rather than unused conditions, and made for business rather than decoration/vanity. That is not to say that uniques would never be used though!

"military and police weapons" seems to be the gist of the definitions I've found

neutral  Colin Rowe: Surely "service weapons" is a translation of "Dienstwaffen"?? Is the meaning of "Gebrauchswaffe" not simply any weapon designed to be used (be it by police, military, hunters, etc.)?
36 mins

neutral  hazmatgerman (X): With Rowe's arguments. A service weapon by def. will not normally be legally used by a leisure hunter / shooter. Gebrauchswaffe will be used by all, official or otherwise.

disagree  Colin Rowe: The text says "Gebrauchswaffen überwiegen, doch darunter finden sich auch wunderbare Einzelstücke." I would sincerely hope that these exceptional pieces are also "conventional"!! See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conventional_weapons

-> you have a point there! But here we are talking about weapons of a historical nature.

neutral  Jim Tucker (X): "Conventional" used with "weapons" generally means not nuclear, chemical, or biological.// "Special" weapons can also be conventional. It's not an accurate definition.
5 hrs
-> I agree with regard to modern weaponry, but have my doubts as to historical arms.

disagree  hazmatgerman (X): In technical lingo "conventional" is supplement to WMD. Nothing to do with historical firearms.

combat weapon

Explanation:
"ceremonial weapon" is a common term, but the term for its opposite seems much less established. With a little patience, Google ("combat weapon" with "museum" and without "close") gives decent results for this term. I referenced a Wikipedia article, where it is clearly used in contrast to other categories of weapons.
Please don't forget hazmatgerman's comment that the logic of the original sentence is a little off, which makes the translation difficult: custom-made objects (Einzelstücke) could also theoretically be used for combat.

Example sentence(s):
  • In their heyday, they were used as a combat weapon, as an execution tool, and as a display of power.

neutral  hazmatgerman (X): The source does not strictly limit its scope to combat weapons, hunting and sporting ones may be included.//that humour I'm afraid I don't share. Thanks.
1 hr
-> "zeughausartige Atmosphäre" + the weapons listed (only "Gewehre" is dual-use) = basis of assumption. But you're right: This assumption must fit the specific context (sinolig's job). Use of "Everyday use"/"daily use" with weapons seems like black humor.

standard-issue weapons

Explanation:
In other words, weapons that are issued to all members of a civil or military force, and therefore not so special, as opposed to the "Einzelstücke" that are contrasted with them in your sentence.

Jonathan's "service weapons" is also correct, but "standard-issue" brings out the author's contrast here better.

Found this, which is very expressive:

agree  hazmatgerman (X): Within reason, yes, but your term would omit the "used" aspect which is inherent to "Gebrauchswaffe".re Kaliber: that term is generic & does not refer to a single round, whereas the search term refers to individual pieces./seen & changed. Tx.
9 hrs
-> Not really inherent; presumably the "wunderbare Einzelstücke" are also usable weapons. The distinction in this sentence is between something common and something rare. Compare "Gebrauchswaffen-Kaliber": GW means "standard" weapons. (See added reference)

Weapons for everyday/daily use sound kind of funny to me. I ask myself: are there any weapons that we use every day/daily?

When I wrote that "weapons for everyday/daily use sound kind of funny to me", I was not able to make myself any clearer at that point in time. Michael Watson has put it more expressively: "daily use" with weapons seems like black humor.

neutral  hazmatgerman (X): Can't recognize that term in this context. And yes, there are weapons that are used daily by their possessors; nothing new, really.//your search tip remains silent on the pertinent disctinction to be made.//see discussion.
13 hrs
-> Search tip: Google for "common weapons" + "museum" // Which "pertinent distinction?" // Seen. New search tip: Google for a) "common weapons" + "rare weapons" b) "common weapons" + "unique weapons". You may even enter "museum" as an additional search term.
