Deutsch term

Koennte man "ein anderer wind weht" einfach uebersetzen mit" "the wind is blowing from a different direction" or is there actually an American figure of speech that refers to the German "ein anderer Wind weht"?
Change log

Discussion

British Diana Dec 5, 2012:
es geht strenger zu Die Bedeutung ist wohl die , dass es in der Erwachsenenwelt strenger (weniger kindgemäß) zugeht. Hier in Weinfranken gibt es eine schöne Redensart, die oft angewendet wird, wenn verhätschelte Vorschulkinder zum ersten Mal in die Schule gehen müssen: " Da geht's aus einem anderen Fässle".

it's a whole new ballgame

would be a slightly more cooloquial way of saying things are different
Note from asker:
Thank you WML :) I think that's a good one, as all the answers this doctor gave were actually slightly colloquial ;)

the road gets rougher

the way I understand it...

Peer comment(s):

agree British Diana : Helen, it does say that "die Patient sich nicht aufgehoben fühlen."I think this implied less mollycoddling. Of course, the young person might soon get to appreciate being treated as an adult and might despise the former "smooth" road.

Danke Diana; "...aus einem anderen Fässle" kannte ich noch nicht :-)) //edit: 'mollycoddle' ist auch ein schönes Wort... :-)

Thank you very much, Wendy!
neutral Helen Shiner : I don't think things are necessarily worse, just different with a more adult way of doing things - such as taking more responsibility for oneself.

THX, Helen. In the context given I do believe that worsening is implied here.
agree Michael Martin, MA : I have used a more neutral phrase myself but the phrase is great and based on a perfectly acceptable conclusion in this context.

'the situation is different' or 'they do things differently'

imho

Thank you David :)

agree Nicola Wood : They do things differently works for me.

Many thanks, Nicola.
agree Armorel Young : yes - "ein anderer Wind" is only a different wind - although "worse" may be implied, it isn't in the phrase and so shouldn't be introduced in the translation

Many thanks, Armorel.
agree Helen Shiner : Completely agree with Armorel. It may not be worse; it may just mean they have to take more personal responsibility.

neutral Michael Martin, MA : Agree this doesn't have to be negative but I think a more vivid expression should be used to match the tone of the original..

wind blows from a different direction

"There are times when the wind blows from a different direction in adult medicine.."
This phrase doesn't reach the level of idiom but seems to be used to depict situations requiring adjustment

Examples from links below:
"The situation has changed; the wind is blowing from a different direction. We need to tack, we need to move." And leadership is required at those times."
http://www.intuition.org/txt/kouzes.htm

"..the Obama Administration comes in and does the exact same thing, but this time the political winds are blowing from a different direction."

Perhaps, this colorful phrase might also work..

"Occasionally, it becomes apparent that adult medicine is a different kettle of fish.."
