I'm really only guessing here.
The Google hits suggest that the term refers to the first round of selling. After a year or so, a cheap second edition may be published, with different (or no royalties) for the artist at all.
In connection with Video/DVD lending, it looks like there is a special "high price" for those lending shops, during the first weeks. Afterwards there's a lower price for selling the videos/DVDs to the general public.

It seems more to be about price classing in its own right, as opposed to whether retail or wholesale etc. And I susupect the industry prefers to refer to the most expensive class as "standard".
