German term

Flächengewicht

German to English Tech/Engineering Paper / Paper Manufacturing Postal services
Weight and measures for postcards.

"Das maximale Flächengewicht einer Postkarte hat die Stärke einer klassischen Pommesschale. Das minimale Flächengewicht einer Postkarte hat die Stärke einer klassischen Postkarte."

I've found "grammage" as an paper industry-specific term but that may be too specific for my context. Would service weight work?

And what is a Pommesschale? Is that a potato skin or a "Tute" for Pommesfrites
Proposed translations (English)
4 +8 base weight

Langenscheidt also has weight per unit area, but base weight is used in connection with paper.
Pommesschale = yes, I think you're right about the Tüte

Basis weight seems more common than base weight.

Basis Weight and Grammage
Conversion Tables
Of Use in the Publishing Industry

To ensure production quality when publications designed or typeset in one country are printed in a second country, it may be necessary to convert US basis weights to their metric equivalents or vice versa. Because designers and publishers often do not have ready access to conversion tables, EDS Inc., Editorial & Design Services, has published the multidirectional tables on this page. (For grammage of Japanese papers, see Japanese Papers for Printing.)

Basis Weight
In the United States, the weight in pounds of one ream (500 sheets) of paper cut to the basic size (or trade size) for a specific grade of paper.

agree TonyTK : "basis weight or grammage". The "Schale" is a paper dish thingy - the same thing you get your Currywurst in.
