German term

durchgehende physikalische Schraube

German to English Science Physics symmetry operations and crystallography
My request is for someone with expertise in symmetry theory to tell me a) how this term is translated and b) whether my translation of the context sentence is in essence correct.

Gleitdrehung: die Koppelung von Translation und Drehung. Fallen Dreh- und Gleitachse zusam-
men, ergibt sich die Schraubung, und ist dabei die Zähligkeit unendlich, entsteht eine durchge- hende physikalische Schraube.

If the axis of rotation and the axis of glide coincide, a screw displacement results. If the number of axes of symmetry is infinite, a continuous physical screw results.

If anyone could please recommend a resource?
Proposed translations (English)

continuous helix

I would render the Gleitachse as "the line of translation", and a "durchgehende physikalische Schraube" is probably a continuous helix (I'm not sure about the adjective "physikalische" - isn't everything physical?).

Perhaps this Wikipedia entry plus references can help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screw_axis#Crystallography

I just realized what the author means by the adjective "physikalsch" --

The infinite symmetry manifests itself physically as a continuous helical structure. So, yes, continuous helix should be correct.
