In a Catholic parish history from Minnesota, written in the 1870s: "Die Seelsorge in Meiers Grove uebertrug nun Reverendissimus Abbas dem Priester Matthias Sautner, dem als Ordensname der des h.B. & D.E. Anselmus gegeben ward." I understand that Anselmus was this priest's monastic name, but can't find any reference to the abbreviations h.B. and D.E. Any suggestions?

Armorel Young Sep 24, 2019:
@Adrian I'm not pouring cold water on traditional religious nomenclature and I may simply be thick, but I don't understand what Dionysius Exiguus has to do with it if the priest's monastic name was Anselmus. With your translation, the sentence becomes "... who as a monastic name was given that of the Holy Brother & Dionysius the Humble Anselmus". I don't understand what that means, since Dionysius' name wasn't Anselmus. As I said before, could you please explain how you think this should be interpreted? I'm perfectly aware that it may just be me not getting it, but I need the interpretation - and the link between Dinoysius and Anselm - spelt out.

@ philgoddard You might be onto something. Maybe "des heiligen Bischofs" for "h.B."? Still not sure what "D.E." might be. Of course, maybe that "E" stands for "Episcopus" in Latin (=Bishop)?
philgoddard Sep 22, 2019:
Anselm was a saint, a bishop, and a doctor of the church. I don't know if that's a clue or I'm barking up the wrong tree.

neutral Armorel Young : I don't get it - how does this fit with the name Anselmus? - please explain.

I am surprised that you are pouring cold and unholy water on this traditional nomenclature en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_name // JTB would not be spelt out as John the Baptist as a prefixed religious name. Otherwise, feel free to post your own answer.
