German term

Tradierungsforschung

German to English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
Examples:

Grundlagen einer feldphänomenologischen Introjekt- und Tradierungsforschung.

VolkswagenStiftung fördert Tradierungsforschung mit 270.000 Euro
Für das Forschungsprojekt "Vergleichende Tradierungsforschung" der Universität Witten/Herdecke und der Freien Universität Berlin ...

Other than the dictionary translation as "handing down" or "passing on" (e.g. of a tradition, way of life, etc.), Tradierung seems to have an innumerable number of translations (cf. http://www.linguee.com/search?direction=auto&query=tradierun... ). What is the terminus technicus for Tradierungsforschung though?

Discussion

Thayenga Dec 3, 2009:
That's what it is, like I've said. And it does make sense. :)
David Williams (asker) Dec 3, 2009:
I see so it is basically oral history research/studies then?

@ Johanna: Zum Glück handelte es sich oben nur um Beispiele, nicht um meine Vorlage. Dem entpsrechend muss ich glücklicherweise Introjektforschung nicht übersetzen :-)
Jim Tucker (X) Dec 2, 2009:
"Research" is unnecessary here in the English... ...it's in the German to mark this subject as an academic field -- otherwise you just have "Tradition," after all. You could leave it out of a translation of "Vergleichende Tradierungsforschung", though of course you would need "research" --or better yet, "studies," in a sentence like "VolkswagenStiftung fördert Tradierungsforschung"
Johanna Timm, PhD Dec 2, 2009:
Introjektforschung klingt auch recht vielversprechend :-) Da die beiden wohl zusammengehören, wäre interessant zu wissen, wie du das übersetzt hast?
Thayenga Dec 2, 2009:
Tradieren means: weiterreichen, mündlich überliefern.
Based on this, it might be...research into oral transmission.
Though I'm not sure if this would fit here.
David Williams (asker) Dec 2, 2009:
Research into transgenerational transmission perhaps?

Research into the handing down of history

Yet another version referring to a very broad field applying sociological approaches to study as to how historical events are handed down through the generations.

research into the transmission of the past

On a theoretical level the study establishes a connection between a theory of memory and the more empirical orientated Tradierungsforschung (research in the down-handing of the past). Under reference to other studies this work specifies (refines) and at the same time broadens the concept of down-handing (Tradierung).

hand down
To transmit in succession, as from father to son, or from predecessor to successor.
Fables are handed down from age to age.
920, T. S. Eliot, “Tradition and the Individual Talent”, in The Sacred Wood:
Yet if the only form of tradition, of handing down, consisted in following the ways of the immediate generation before us in a blind or timid adherence to its successes, "tradition" should positively be discouraged.

Any attempt to call into question or to deny the reality of the Holocaust or of any other crime against humanity is to be deeply regretted. UNESCO has a major role to play in this work of transmission, which is of especial importance to the younger generations.

neutral Thayenga : "Of the past" by itself might not be sufficiently specific.

agree Helen Shiner : Transmission needs to be in there somewhere, since that precisely is what is being studied.

agree Jim Tucker (X) : A common equivalent of the term, which for understandable historical reasons is a bigger field in Germany than elsewhere. I would prefer "the transmission of historical consciousness," but yours is widely used. "Research" is unnecessary in English.
