German term

Empfangsweg

German to English Tech/Engineering Telecom(munications) radio/tv
This is from a website giving information for students in uni residences, in a section on radio and tv licence fees.

Leo and dict.cc both give "receive path" but that sounds a bit technical in this context. Is there a more general term? They seem to have taken the explanation directly from gez.de's glossary.

"Jeder Rundfunkteilnehmer, der in Deutschland ein Rundfunkgerät zum Empfang bereithält ist verpflichtet, die Geräte bei der Gebühreneinzugszentrale (GEZ) zu melden und Rundfunkgebühren zu zahlen. Rundfunkempfangsgeräte sind alle Geräte, mit denen Rundfunkprogramme (Radio- oder Fernsehprogramme) unabhängig vom Empfangsweg empfangen oder aufgezeichnet werden können. "

Thanks!

Discussion

Bernd Runge Jul 11, 2009:
unabhängig vom Empfangsweg is basically now including PCs, Laptops, Netbooks, UMTS-phones etc.
When your PC is designed in a way that TV or radio programs COULD be received with that device then you have to pay GEZ fees (even if your PC is not connected to the WWW).
All this is explained explicitly (in German) on

method of reception

I think this would fit the context better. This is advice for students rather than a technical manual.

Thank you, Richard
agree Lancashireman : Agree with your reasoning. Slightly off topic, but these people really are a public menace, both here in the UK and Germany. http://www.toytowngermany.com/lofi/index.php/t1245-0.html http://www.tvlicensing.biz/

Thank you, Andrew. Some disappointing spelling and use of the apostrophe in this informative link :)

Radio and TV channels can be received in several ways/modalities: digital (e.g. DVB-T) /analog(traditional TV and radio)///through satellite/cable/radio transmission.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Colin Newberry : I don't find "modality" very general.

... might be another way of saying the same thing.
BBC very often refers to Online/Internet being the third broadcasting medium.

German term (edited): unabhaengig vom Empfangsweg

regardless of the way in which the programmes are received

While German syntax and terminology tend to be noun-oriented, in English verb phrases are often considered more natural.
Peer comment(s):

agree Colin Newberry : Like this one best (up to now).
