Ein Kohlenhobel ist eine Maschine, die im Bergbau beim Abbau von Kohleflözen eingesetzt wird. Sie schält die Kohle am Vorderende ähnlich einem Hobel ab. Der Kohlenhobel selbst ist antriebslos. Er ist in ein Kettenband integriert, das über Antriebsmotoren, die sich an den Strebenden befinden, am Kohlenstoß entlang bewegt wird. Bei jeder Fahrt schält der Hobel eine fünf bis zehn Zentimeter dicke Schicht vom Flöz ab (Schnitttiefe). Diese Methode nennt sich aufgrund der Arbeitsweise auch schälende Gewinnung. Entsprechend der Kohlenhärte und der geologischen Verhältnisse werden unterschiedliche Bauweisen eingesetzt, wie Gleit- oder Reißhakenhobel.
