Η μέθοδος ταξινόμησης που ακολουθούν οι Ihlstrom and Akesson εστιάζει το ενδιαφέρον της κυρίως πάνω στους συσχετισμούς των τριών κατηγοριών κατηγοριοποίησης, δηλαδή μεταξύ του content, form and functionality. Με άλλα λόγια αυτό που παρουσιάζει ιδιαίτερη σημασία είναι ο τρόπος με τον οποίο ένα genre μπορεί να συσχετίζεται στα χαρακτηριστικά του με κάποιο άλλο genre και να δημιουργείται έτσι μια αμφισημία ως προς την εννοιολογική τους ερμηνεία, προβληματική την οποία αντιμετώπισα κατά την διάρκεια διεξαγωγής των εμπειρικών μου μελετών στο πέμπτο κεφάλαιο όπου έπρεπε να αποφασίσω την ταξινόμηση των genres, προβληματική στην οποία αναφέρομαι και στο conclusion της έρευνάς μου. Το παράδειγμα που χρησιμοποιούν οι συγγραφείς σε αυτή την μελέτη αφορά το genre “search item” το οποίο το εντάσσουν στην κατηγορία του content. Το συγκεκριμένο genre μπορεί να συσχετιστεί όμως και να εμφανιστεί με παραλλαγές και με άλλες ονομασίες όπως για παράδειγμα με τα genres “textbox”, “button” or “icon” της κατηγορίας form ή με το genre “searching” της κατηγορίας functionality. Παραλληλίζοντας την ερμηνευτική αυτή προβληματική σχέση μεταξύ των genres στο πεδίο της τηλεόρασης μπορούμε να ισχυριστούμε το ίδιο για τα τηλεοπτικά genres. Αν για παράδειγμα θεσπίζαμε τρεις κύριους, αλλά γενικούς, άξονες στους οποίους θα εμπίπτανε διάφορα χαρακτηριστικά, άξονες όπως: πρωινάδικο – μουσικές εκπομπές – ταινίες, τότε αυτοί οι άξονες δεν θα ήταν αρκετοί από μόνοι τους να ενσωματώσουν τα χαρακτηριστικά του κάθε πρωινάδικου, της κάθε μουσικής εκπομπής ή της κάθε ταινίας και δεν επιλύει μια τέτοια προσέγγιση την προβληματική της ταξινόμησης αλλά αντίθετα την περιπλέκει ακόμη περισσότερη.
