A suggestion: You should open one of the billion web pages about the theories of Jean Piaget and you would find much of your answers.
These two mechanisms have been one of the pinpoints of his theory. They serve to view the learning process as a continous adaptation of the subject to the environment and of the environment to the subject.

Giorgia, ma che brutta gatta da pelare che ti sei cuccata! Il problema e' che questo tipo di testi tradotti in inglese suonano orrendi e restano incomprensibili oppure vengono semplificati a rischio di perdere buona parte del loro contenuto (reale o percepito dallo scrivente...)
