Italian term

otre di coccio

Italian to English Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters In A Historical Novel
Contesto:

Molte Grazie,

Barbara

Discussion

Shabelula Nov 25, 2015:
POT
implies earthenware I guess. Otre is rather large, with at least 5 or 10 l. capacity (but up to 50 or 100 I think)
Howard Sugar Nov 24, 2015:
In any case for translation purposes, an earthenware vase, jar or bottle would work find for the analogy.
Howard Sugar Nov 24, 2015:
The otre was originally a kind of liquid container made out of skin, carried by shepherds.
Angela Guisci Nov 24, 2015:
@Howard
yes jar is a " vasetto" or "barattolo"
Howard Sugar Nov 24, 2015:
Otre is a kind of bottle and coccio is an earthenware. The writer is making the analogy of someone hitting an earthenware bottle with a stick that breaks into shards.

earthenware vase

like this one the one in the link below. What is misleading is that if you go look up otre most sites/dictionaries give you "goatskin wine bag" or something similar. But here in Tuscany at least, otre is just another word for those huge terracotta vases you see in gardens, the ones with a narrow neck and two handles either side - un vaso di cotto.
Coccio is usually of less fine manufacture than cotto.
