Italian term

nucleo fondativo

Italian to English Science History Arturo Malignani
I guess this means 'was the founding base of" but I am trying to think of a less clumsy phrase; any other suggestions welcome!

"il materiale raccolto per quell’esposizione costituì il nucleo fondativo delle collezioni dei musei della scienza italiani"

The exposition in question is the Chicago Century of Progress fair, which took place in 1933.

embryonic basis

“The material collected for that exhibition constituted the embryonic {primordial} basis of the Italian Science Museums’ collections.”

My take on the sentence.
