Italian term or phrase: range più o meno ampi
"I dati erano riportati come range più o meno ampi attorno a un valore medio."

I know this is probably a straightforward question, but so far I've drawn a blank. Thanks for any input.

This would suffice.

To clarify:
distributed around a central value

The translation of "più o meno ampi" can be omitted, and this is an educated answer.

What they want to say, as far as a former geek can understand, is that they have more than 2 or 3 results that produced the average (or median) number. This is usually an important issue in such tests. The number of results is important.

ranging widely / having a wide range / being widely dispersed

Explanation:
"... around the mean" What I think they are stressing is that the data have a mean (average value) and a large standard deviation (range) around that.

I don't see plural "ranges" as being involved.

The ST should easily confirm or disprove this reading :-)
