Have a look at http://www.vatican.va/news_services/liturgy/cap-mus-sistina/... Since we're talking about Santa Maria Maggiore, which is Vatican State, this will surely help! Greetings s from Rome!

Kapellmeister
The Kapellmeister is the director of music (= Italian: maestro di cappella; French: maître de chapelle) of a musical establishment, either of a king or prince, or of an opera-house or municipality. The term Kapellmeistermusik has a pejorative implication, suggesting music that is correct but uninspired, a criticism widely if inaccurately applied to a number of 19th century composers now subject to re-evaluation.

agree Angela Arnone : indeed: a choirmaster would not normally compose, only conduct. See Vivaldi/Bach et al

neutral Angela Arnone : choirmaster (all one one) is "maestro del coro" - the conductor not the composer
25 mins
agree Vittorio Preite : referred to a church choir, non church groups are called "chorus", hence "chorus master"
