to get/gain that winning inch senza dubbio userei questo per un target Uk/USA
SYLVY75 Jul 28, 2015:
Non posso inserire la risposta perché non sono registrata come madrelingua inglese, ma in questo caso direi "to gain that extra inch".

Esempio: "Be it ball sports or racing, winter sports or swimming, the race to gain that extra second or extra inch that is the difference between winning and losing is constantly being played out in a different arena – on computers." ( da: http://www.cd-adapco.com/industries/sports )

to get that centimeter more

Centimeter is one thing; inch is another kind of measure. Even in UK, now the decimal metric system is used.

2 hrs

one inch closer

Dal link indicato ti ho segnalato la frase esemplificativa così da trovarla subito.
Example sentence:

Having no package does not get us one inch closer to our objectives

3 hrs

go that extra inch

This is fairly neutral, as presumably it has to cover disciplines other than just running (high-jump, long-jump etc.).
