Asker: Because for me "social work" has connotations that refer to state employees as in Soical Services.

Asker: "Community work" seems to be the term that was escaping me! Cheers!!!

I would use this in context. "Social work" is a bit too specific as a professional field (social services, social workers, etc.), in my view, but you could use it. If it weren't for the specific context, "voluntary work" or "charity" might do since most of it is in the "welfare" or nowadays "social" field.

I agree with Juliette's "community work", but I also heard "community service " a lot in the US. I think "service" expresses very well the volunteering side of the whole thing.
