Der Sinn ist sicher "gegenseitig ausschließend", d.h. wenn eine Funktion gewählt wird, kann nicht gleichzeitig eine andere Funktion aktiv sein.

Es kann allerdings sein, dass es noch einen treffenderen Ausdruck gibt.
