Japanese term

VB6以前では

Japanese to English Other Computers: Software
VB6以前のバージョンではというフレーズは "in earlier version of VB6" でいいのでしょうか? 日本語の「以前」はVB6も含まれますが、VB6が含まれない場合は "in earlier version than VB6" という表現も可能でしょうか? よろしくお願いします。

It does help a lot! I'm not a native speaker and now I have to translate some materials for software development. I can compose sentences in English but I really don't feel how they really sounds to native speaker. So I appreciate the help of you guys a lot! Thank you all!!

in versions earlier than VB6

If it does not include VB6, which I assume it doesn't, I would say "in versions earlier than VB6".

in versions previous to VB6... / in earlier versions than VB6...

VB6 is Visual Basic 6.0 and earlier versions are VB1, VB2, ..., VB5.
"VB6以前のバージョン"in Japanese, does not include VB6, it refers to the earlier/previous versions.

agree Kurt Hammond : Correct correct.

Japanese term (edited): VB6が含まれない場合

in earlier version exclude VB6

if you wish to keep "earlier version" as a single word, I would translate like this.

Also;

in earlier version exclude VB6 (VB6だけ含まれない場合。他のVBであれば動作する旧プログラム等)

以前~: earlier than
以前: earlier

Hope Kurt Hammond clarify this to you.

Again;

Her own translation is still fine (looks exactly same to other's answer)

Attention to Kurt Hammond:

I did not translate for VB6以前では (we never use "exclude" in this case)

Hope this make sense you now.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Kurt Hammond : this is awkward - I say it because it does not sound natural. I don't know how it got in a Microsoft textbook.

Thanks. You will find this in Microsoft text book anyway. Do you have any particular reason saying this?
disagree Angel Yamada (X) : "in earlier version exclude VB6" --> Simply it's not correct English. People without the context (original phrase in japanese), will do not find the meaning. The correct form would be "in earlier versions (see plural), (comma) excluding VB6 (note gerund)

Unfortunately "excluding" not showing in a text. Copied one here; in earlier version (excludes XXX)

Versions prior to/through 6.0[主語]

When I first learned Japanese—in a previous century— 以上 meant "or greater" (inclusive) not the obvious "greater than" (exclusive) that it so *often* means today, so figuring out whether this 以前 is inclusive or exclusive is the translator's problem. A careful Japanese writer would use より前 and まで, respectively. My *GUESS* would be the former.

Without a *CONTEXT*, it's hard to tell, but I'm singularly unimpressed by the knee-jerk translation of では as "in" when it most likely is the *SUBJECT* indicator.

例:VB versions prior to/through 6.0 regularly trash registry settings.

Am I the only one who finds the のバージョン bit redundant in Japanese`?

"Versions XXX execute the source code in an interpreter"? Puh-leeze.

Versions XXX interpret the source code...
or
Versions XXX load the source code into an interpreter for execution and debugging.

agree KathyT : This is the most succinct, methinks.

I've used it often over the years.
