Zaproponowane tłumaczenie pasuje, jeśli "front" rozumiemy jako całość działań wojennych na wschodzie.
Jeśli mamy na myśli jedynie linię styczności wojsk (same bitwy bezpośrednie), to lepiej byłoby użyć:

"... untill the battlefront passed Lviv." - patrz drugi link
ewentualnie: "...waited for the battlefront to pass Lviv"

Wydaje mi się, że w tym kontekście raczej chodzi o to drugie znaczenie i ostatnie zdanie będzie najzgrabniejsze.
