There was a decline in woodcutting with the increasing versatility and popularity of line engraving on metal. Even in the Netherlands, where woodcuts lasted longest, they were almost obsolete by the 18th cent. In England, however, Thomas Bewick popularized wood engraving." http://www.bartleby.com/65/wo/woodcut.html "Wood engraving as a means of illustrating ornithology books has been popular from the 18th century until today. Differing from the woodcut, which is made in relief on a block of soft wood with horizontal grain, a wood engraving is cut across the polished end grain of a hard wood block. The resulting print is more detailed than that of a woodcut." http://rmc.library.cornell.edu/ornithology/exhibit/exhibit3.... |
