This obviously is referring to a tool of some sort, does anyone know the correct name in english?

Only because of its similarity in name, I was wondering if this was a sort of heavy duty hammer (i.e. a maul?).

Below is the context.

O empregado manuseava um malhau dianteiro para fixa-lo no suporte e depois pinta-lo e ao tentar fixar suas pontas, o malhau fechou e esmagou o dedo polegar direito do empregado.
