I need some help translating the expression : "...de grande nomeada..." (European Portuguese)

Here's the context:

«A doutrina clássica e medieval viria entretanto a ser posta em causa nos sécs. XVII e XVIII, em Inglaterra e em França, onde surgiram pensadores de grande nomeada a defender que a origem do Estado não era natural, mas voluntária, resultando de um contrato, ou acordo de vontades, entre os homens.»

So, I'm not sure whether the appropriate translation is "...renowned thinkers" or "great thinkers worthy of the name" or some other...
