In Portuguese/English Michaelis Dictionary I found "gold-washers" or "gold digger". But I could not find anything similar in Longman's Dictionary of Contemporary English.

placer miner
The early California mines were placer deposits of free, or pure, gold mixed with sand and gravel. The mining pan became the basic tool of the placer miner. He recovered the gold by agitating water and debris in the pan; the gold, being heavier than the sand or gravel, settled to the bottom of the pan. (from Answers.com)

Note from asker:
Grato. Como se trata de garimpeiros inclusive do século XVIII para cá, ainda assim você usaria "prospector" ou usaria algo como gold diggers? |
