The context is
A Marinha tem equipado os navios hidro-oceanográficos com sondas de feixe fino e agora com multifeixe, permitindo a cobertura total do fundo.....
I believe a «sonda» is possibly a plummet (or sounding lead)or possibly even a probe but otherwise clueless.
If anyone can help, I'd be very greatful.
