David Hollywood May 22, 2006:
thanks Cristina, I wasn't aware of the specific meaning in this case :)
Cristina Pereira (asker) May 22, 2006:
David I was kind of expecting this would happen :-) In Portugal, "esplanada" (in this context) is a café's outdoor sitting area (tables and chairs, with or no service). Thanks!

a long stretch of open level ground (paved or grassy) for walking beside the seashore
wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

An esplanade or promenade is a raised walkway area. Although an esplanade can be anywhere, almost all are alongside the sea, a tidal river or other large water body. This allows people to walk along the sea front, usually for recreational purposes, whatever the state of the tide, without having to walk on the beach. Esplanades became popular in Victorian times when it was fashionable to visit seaside resorts.
