Discussion

Anton Konashenok Jun 13, 2016:
With Michael This is totally unidiomatic, and even with the ethnic bias, this would not be "in an illegal way" but more likely "mercilessly", "with no remorse" or even "by killing the alleged offender". Not that killing is legal, but the connotation is clearly different.
Mikhail Kropotov Jun 13, 2016:
That is, unless you buy into the atrocious bias and hatemongering of the article you're translating.
Mikhail Kropotov Jun 13, 2016:
Absolutely not This is no idiom and does NOT mean "doing things in an illegal way." It simply says "doing things the Chechen way" -- whatever that implies in your text.

do things under the table

This is a good phrase you can use to describe illegal/underhand activity. See sentences below.
Example sentence:

It was strictly an under-the-table deal. The mayor made a few bucks under the table, too.

A lot of these people work 80-hour weeks with all or half of their salaries paid under the table.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Mikhail Kropotov : Sorry, but this is wrong. The Russian expression literally says "doing things the Chechen way". Your English-language links are thus irrelevant. I know the asker wanted an expression with that very meaning, but this is not an English monolingual question.
