Russian term

подбивать

Russian to English Other Ships, Sailing, Maritime
During bad weather, a ship crew member (on a drilling platform) went on deck to "подбивать крепления консоли, клинья".

I think it basically means that he reinforced whatever it was that was holding the cantilever securely in place, but perhaps there is a correct way of saying this. There seem to be so many possible translations for подбивать that I am at sea.. (if you will excuse the pun!)

Does anyone know the correct way to explain what he did?

Many thanks!

When satisfied that base lift is level, drive all wedges tight with a hammer (minimum 500g). ... Engage the retaining straps and secure by tightening the 19mm nuts. ... Fix 1.4m end toe board across each end of platform at 2m level, fitting loop over pin on .... parts: I.e. either stair return barrier & ledgers or 2 x console brackets,
Note from asker:
Does it definitely imply that a mallet is used? Would you actually include that in the translation, or to be faithful to the original, should I just say "to secure"? Many thanks.

secure, tighten, fix

Usually on a drilling rig if you подбиваете something it means you hook it up. However it does not fit this context at all. If the weather was bad I would think they were trying to secure that in place. IMHO
