  -> not the exact word. Firmware is described in computer glossaries as a software routines stored in ROM. Unlike RAM, ROM stays intact even in the absence of electrical power. Startup routines and low-level I/O instructions are stored in firmware.

agree  David Mitchell: And firmware is also the embedded code in ROM, etc., which is refreshed by on-board batteries. The 'firm' part is relative, as I suspect we've all been around long enough to have a CMOS die with its battery...
