oh, ok. well, i perceive it in a different way; like, when there's some show going on and it's interrupted by breaking news, first you hear the intro, "заставка", or that special 'news' tune, and then the news itself, just like you would if it were a scheduled news report. but in this case, i don't see how the intro can be disturbing; it must either be different from the regular tune or i don't get the 'заставка' part at all.

I interpret 'заставка' as an interrupting event, like advertisement. But news are not that way. Either they are a planned event or a "breaking one" IMHO

Ilya, but they still have the same intros on one and the same channel, don't they? (to be frank, i rarely watch TV) so it's really hard to tell just by "заставка" how 'breaking' the news is. or do you interpret 'заставка' differently?

On Russian TV either you have planned news time, starting with news headlines and developing headlines into full news stories, or breaking news release, which comes abruptly without any plan or schedule.

That's kind of what I was thinking, how my attention would be caught by a particular tune or signal. But "just not the best word choice for the source" is a frequent occurrence in my life!

if she can hear it, i'd guess it's the tune that introduces the news; maybe there's some special 'тревожная' tune for a breaking news or smth, which would be weird, though (i.e. could it be just not the best word choice for the source?. i can't think of any special breaking news theme, aren't they always the same as for regular reports?) bottom line is, imho, 'заставка' refers to the introduction thing preceding the news, and btw i'm not sure a headline is smth that can be heard.
