Marcelo González Dec 6, 2021:
I disagree, Chris Selecting a target variety as part of one's overall approach is appropriate. And in this context where there may not be national police forces (that immediately come to mind) in the English-speaking world, the next best option might be state or provincial forces, so the U.S. with its 50 state police forces might be useful here, as would the 14 state police forces in Australia, the various provinces of Canada, the force in Scotland, and the one in Northern Ireland.
AllegroTrans Dec 6, 2021:
OK The USA has numerous police forces and they don't all have the same rank system. Nuff said.
schmetterlich (asker) Dec 6, 2021:
Thank you for your replies. The target audience is the USA.
AllegroTrans Dec 6, 2021:
Where we are going? Could be just about anywhere. IMO it is dangerous and confusing to mushroom this into a so-called equivalent police rank in another country. A country-neutral term is called for which leaves it crystal clear that this is from Peru.
Marcelo González Dec 5, 2021:
@Taña - yes, Peru ... which is why I did not say 'where we are' ... just 'where we're going' :-) i.e., the target variety/country
Taña Dalglish Dec 5, 2021:
@ Marcelo At the top the country is stated. It is Peru. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Police_of_Peru
From the link, you will note that "Suboficial Técnico Primero", "Suboficial Técnico Segundo" and "Suboficial Técnico Tercero" have an equivalent NATO ranking of WO-3, WO-2, and WO-1 and corresponds to the category of "Chief Warrant Officer" (WO-3, 2) and Warrant Officer (WO-1) which I understand is no longer in use. https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Policía_Nacional_del_Perú and https://www.google.com/search?q=Chief Warrant officer "subof...
Marcelo González Dec 5, 2021:
Context - target variety Knowing where we're going would be helpful, particularly important in this context perhaps, where police ranks should be fairly easy to find. Of course, there is no national police, as such, in the US, nor in the UK, so the various U.S. state police departments might be helpful (for the New Jersey State Police ranks I've come across, see below).

Police technician.
Police officer/patrol officer/police detective.
Police corporal.
Police sergeant.
Police lieutenant.
Police captain.
Deputy police chief.
Chief of police.

Technical Noncommissioned Officer First Class

In this context, I would choose the already known terms for this rank:
"Technical Noncommissioned Officer First Class". This is because of my own experience in the military field.

neutral AllegroTrans : Your refs are from anywhere but Peru ansd is there any such rank as "NCO" in the Peruvian police force?

Yes, that is what a "suboficial" is. My intention was to coin an English equivalent with some backing from English-speaking sources. I now see that Taña has found some English refs for Peru that support my choice.

In summary, and in all likelihood, the closest you may get is "non-commissioned offer" (NCO) - specialist as per patinba's suggestion.

Here is a link from Peru and references the "first technical non-commissioned officer" which is equivalent to WO-3 (NATO).

agree AllegroTrans : Yes, indeed not easy and risky to "force" an equivalent rank in an En spkg. country or NATO

Thank you. However, I disagree with your neutral on patinba's proposal! The rank is an NCO (non-commissioned officer) which does exist in Peru and evident by all the links provided! This has nothing to do with "forcing" an equivalent, IMO!
agree Marcelo González : useful references, Taña and, agreed: this is not easy. An approach is needed, and one based on NATO ranks may be an option

Thanks Marcelo.
agree patinba : Thank you for those refs that would seem to confirm at least part of my coinage!
