Discussion

Gene Selkov Aug 25, 2010:
Prepositions to use with software names, &c. Taña, thank you for your kind remarks; I think we should go after a systematic error whenever we see one, even if it seems to be off-topic -- doing so might save us significant hassle in the future. That said, these subject titles demonstrate that the English language is far from systematic. How do we know it is "sediment transport" and not "transportation"? I am not aware of any system to direct us there.

Regarding your suggestion to replace "in" with "utilising", I would not recommend it to a learner of English. This word has strange connotations (at least in some people's minds: http://2.ly/cqyt , and I myself never liked it, even where it was used simply to mean "use".

"In" is a standard preposition to refer to work done using some software, if that software is more like an all-encompassing environment that provides everything necessary to complete the work. Otherwise, if it is just a tool used for a specific purpose, we use "with":

"I decode my raw images with ufraw"
"My friend even orders his pizza in emacs" (without leaving emacs)
"I code in perl"
"The relative importance of these factors was estimated using the relaimpo package in R"
Taña Dalglish Aug 24, 2010:
@ Gene Thank you. I saw the discrepancies/changes that should be made and I commend you for your patience (and merely commented on the asker's question). In addition, I would perhaps be inclined to use "Structural analysis UTILISING SAP2000) instead of "in". It might not hurt to spell out SAP either. http://csiberkeley.com/SAP2000_news/v14/. Thanks Gene and abrazos.
Gene Selkov Aug 24, 2010:
confused source text The subject in question is "clima de oleaje" -- the character of wave formation, patterns and magnitude. It sounds confusing because "medio" and "operacional" have essentially the same meaning. "Oleaje operacional" is used in juxtaposition to "oleaje extremal".

I would have no trouble reading this line if it were written like this:

* Estudio de clima medio de oleaje o oleaje operacional

In which case the translation would be, as Taña suggests, "average wave climate".

Other than that, many other titles you have translated suffer from bad noun-adjective inversions and incorrect use of the plural form. To make them more English, change:

Waves breaker design -> wave breaker design
Beaches regeneration -> Beach regeneration (Regeneration of the beaches)
Extreme analysis study of waving -> Extreme wave analysis
Temperate Climate or operational waving study -> Study of operational wave climate
Study of sediment transport
Study of transverse and logitudinal profiles
Analysis of the tide
Wind analysis
Structural analysis in Sap2000 (whatever that means, sounds OK)
Hydraulics
Physics
Oceanography
Study of tsunamis

average climate (study)

http://www.unep.org/labour_environment/PDFs/TOT-ClimateChang...
La palabra “clima” se refiere al clima medio experimentado durante un
período de larga duración, normalmente 30 años, que incluye los patrones
de temperatura, viento y precipitaciones. El clima de la Tierra no es estático, ha
sufrido cambios, en respuesta a una variedad de factores naturales.

http://www.bvsde.paho.org/bvsdecamclim/fulltext/climatechang...

El clima es el estado medio de las capas inferiores de la atmósfera, y las características
conexas de la tierra o el agua subyacentes, en una región concreta
y generalmente durante un mínimo de varios años. La variabilidad del
clima es la variación con respecto al clima medio, incluidas las variaciones
estacionales y los ciclos regionales a gran escala de las circulaciones
atmosféricas y oceánicas, como El Niño–Oscilación Austral (ENOA) o
la Oscilación del Atlántico Norte.
