El hombre, convertido en dios....

Having become as a god in his own eyes...
The point seems to be man's perception of himself: he obviously did not "become a god/God".
The Spanish seems to echo the Almighty's admonition to Adam and Eve to refrain from partaking of the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and the translation I've suggessted seems to retain this Biblical resonance.
Suerte.

In response to your question:
The deletion of "as a" would make it a stronger statement (i.e., it would heighten the speaker/writer's assertion of "man's" delusional grandeur), but I think it could work.

Note from asker:
I like this one, but what if I get rid of the words "as a." "having become god" |

Having become a deity, man ...
I think I'd use deity rather than god (esp. God, in caps). I think "utility" is an option for usefulness, too.

Man, who became/was made/converted/ transformed (into)(a) God
devoted himself to creating sculptures (geared more towards)/more concerned about beauty than usefulness.
