Al mirar las definiciones de la palabra \"district\" del Diccionario Random House, se presta sin ajustar la terminología a la división norteamericana:

Gracias Michael. La definición de partido en Buenos Aires que aportó la otra persona me permitió entender de qué se estaba hablando, y creo que district es una palabra bastante genérica y se puede usar en este caso.

Claro, en Argentina tenemos Provincias, equivalentes a los Estados, las cuales están divididas en Partidos, dentro de los cuales se encuentran las distintas localidades.

En este caso, Partido, se refiere a la división geográfica del lugar y no a la division con própositos oficiales. En Argentina, acabo de constatar en una página web, todas las provincias estan divididas en departamentos, menos Buenos Aires, que esta dividida en partidos. Por otro lado existe un distrito federal (Capital Federal) , pero el mismo pertenece al país.
Y la palabra distrito, se utiliza al hablar de una division hecha con algun propósito oficial, como bien dice la definicion que dio Michael. Ej: distrito escolar, distrito electoral, distrito militar, etc.

Es por esto que me inclino por COUNTY y no por district.
