Spanish term

cerrito

Spanish to English Medical Livestock / Animal Husbandry
Hi everyone,

I'm translating some research on neonatal calf nutrition and disease prevention measures.

The term I can't pinpoint is "cerrito". It is written in a chart as "diarrea (cerrito)".

Later it is used in a footnote... "Se refiere cerrito que provine de otro establo". There is no other reference in the text.

Any searches turn up non-contextual items.

Thanks,

Shenice

Oct 11, 2019 08:33: Helena Chavarria changed "Level" from "Non-PRO" to "PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (3): Robert Carter, Toni Castano, Helena Chavarria

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Hi everyone,

The client ask me to leave cerrito as is... So, I put ... "Cerrito" refers to calves coming from other barns. They did not give any other explanation
Shenice Parkyn (asker) Oct 11, 2019:
Hi everyone,

Thanks for you input. The client has been asked to clarify the concept. When they get back to me I'll share their thoughts... asap. Happy Friday

@Marie I found the reference for 'Ganado vacuno' in the 26-volume Diccionario Enciclopédico Salvat I bought in 1984, but I'm surprised that I can't find anything on the Internet.
Marie Wilson Oct 6, 2019:
@Helena That seems to be a place, too.

I can't find anything related to cattle, except (be)cerritos
Helena Chavarria Oct 6, 2019:
I was called away but I had come to exactly the same conclusion as Marie. The dictionary entry is as follows:

CERRITOS. Mun. del N. de México, estado de San Luis Potosí; 19.865 hab. en 1970 (10.421 la cab.). Maíz, lechuguilla. Ganado vacuno
Marie Wilson Oct 6, 2019:
I agree with Helena that this is a calf, though I think "cerritos" in her refs is a district in Pereira, Colombia. This could be a typo or variation of "becerrito", so I presume it is just a young male calf.
becerro, becerra
Pereira-Colombia'.

According to my 37-year-old paper encyclopaedia, 'cerritos' is 'ganado vacuno', though I can't find any references online. Only some videos of a 'subasta de cerritos'.

They're definitely calves but I can't find out whether the term refers to a type of calf or it's a synonym.
Shenice Parkyn (asker) Oct 6, 2019:
I thought that too. However, this is a case study exclusively about calves. That said, the original does have various misspelt words... but that were easy to guess. Any other thoughts on what it might be?
neilmac Oct 6, 2019:
Possible typo? For "cerdito" (a piglet). The R and D keys are adjacent on my keyboard.

scours

Scours is the term generally used for diarrhea in calves and the germs that cause it could indeed come from another barn, especially since some cattle raisers get replacement calves from other herds if they lose some of their own.
