This might sort it out for you (or confuse the issue)...?!

Please take a look

In recent years triple trays have become the most common technique for taking impressions. Referred to as triple trays or dual-arch trays, they capture the area to be restored, the opposing area, and the bite relationship. The technique is relatively simple and economical, but can introduce several problems if done incorrectly.

The thing is, that the triple tray technique (of which you have a terrible Spanish version) will take the dual arches into consideration, and the area to be restored SO THAT a bite relationship can be found.

"In recent years triple trays have become **the most common technique for taking impressions**. Referred to as triple trays or ***dual-arch trays***, they capture the area to be restored, the opposing area, and the bite relationship. The technique is relatively simple and economical, but can introduce several problems if done incorrectly.

We see cases of up to six units being requested with triple trays, and sometimes there is no occlusal stop present. We can only assume that the impression was taken in centric relationship (CR), but there is no way to check this. If the patient did not close properly there will be occlusal problems.

Another problem we often see is where the patient has closed on the frame of the tray. If the tray is flexible plastic, it flexes during the impression process and then springs back a small amount when removed from the mouth. This is enough to distort the impression and result in a crown that doesn’t fit. A quick inspection after tray removal can eliminate this problem.

In his article, "A Problem-Solving Impression Technique," Jeffrey C. Hoos, DMD, FAGD, writes that the impression technique should dictate the type of material used in order to achieve distortion-free impressions.

For instance, distortions with dual-arch impressions can occur when materials with high flexibility are used with an open gauze tray. He recommends using rigid metal trays that provide adequate support. In addition, Dr. Hoos suggests using the ***dual-arch technique*** only for cases in which the number of prepared teeth is limited to one or two units.

Recent improvements in the physical properties of polyvinyl siloxane impression materials have prompted Dr. Hoos to develop a ***dual-arch technique*** that yields quick, accurate results using a two-step procedure with only one tray insertion. If you would like to see step-by-step instructions for Dr. Hoos’ technique, please visit his website: www.bettersmile.com/articles/2.html."
