Swedish term

standardmässigt

Swedish to English Bus/Financial Economics
Hello

I have quite a few sentences like:

Räknat i BNP per capita hade de växt ifatt danskarna och britterna som fortfarande låg i Europatoppen ***standardmässigt***.

I know it is not "as standard" in the above sentence but did wonder if it could be translated as living standard except that we don't have the Swedish "levnadsstandard"

Simply translated as "standardswise" seems to vague and unusual in English although this is perhaps the sense in Swedish?

Can anyone help please?

Thanks

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Paul Gratwick Aug 16, 2018:
This refers to standard of living In agreement with Tim K, I am certain that the meaning of the last five words of this sentence is "whose standards of living are still some of the highest in Europe." or words to that effect.
SafeTex (asker) Aug 16, 2018:
@Paul Certainly "by default" is used for standardmässigt in IT and consumption of "standardly supplied products and services, but I don't think there are default settings for economies. It just doesn't seem to work here IMHO but let's wait and see what others say. Thanks for the input in any case

This is a tad clumsy, but I don't see anything better right now. Your interpretation seems on target to me.

I'm accustomed to the term "standard of living," but I think it makes the phrase even clumsier ("in terms of standard of living"), so I didn't go that way.

Thanks, Chris! I don't think the plural means the same thing, though.
agree Agneta Pallinder : as regards standard of living?

Thanks! Also a possibility. I see a number of them, but none of them are exactly graceful. :-)

You will have to consider the overall context, but in economic texts generally, I find that "standardmässig" is always translated as "by default".
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tim Kynerd : In this context, I'm pretty sure "standardmässigt" means something like "with regard to standard."
