Turkish term

son varan

Non-PRO Turkish to English Other Idioms / Maxims / Sayings Obscure word
It is from the Temel joke: ANADOL YOL İSTİYO. See http://www.turkishlanguage.co.uk/jokes.htm. The context is:-
...büyük bir gürültüyle Temel'in yanından geçip öndeki FERRARI`nin yanına yanaşan son model LAMBORGINI`nin şoförü FERRARI`nin şoförüne kapkara gözlüklerinin üzerinden bakıp :

- Kapısalım mı Moruk! 140 km ilerideki
Kapısalım mı Moruk! 140 km ilerideki benzinciye SON VARAN. İlk gelenin deposunu fuller. Ne dersin? FERRARI`nin sürücüsü.
The context is in the last Turkish sentence. I have put the words in capitalsfor easy identification.

Discussion

Tim Drayton Sep 1, 2012:
Last one Not in colloquial language. This is what we say when challenging somebody to a race, or more usually 'first one'.
ATIL KAYHAN Sep 1, 2012:
I presume you mean "the last one".
Tim Drayton Sep 1, 2012:
Used as noun Verbs ending in the -en/-an participle suffix can always be used as nouns with the meaning "the one who ...". 'Son varan' is understood to mean 'son varan (kişi).'

last one

'Last one to the gas/petrol station 140 km ahead' is perhaps the best rendering in idiomatic English.
