Nu we dan eindelijk gezamenlijk beginnen door te krijgen en erkennen dat de mens sinds de industriële revolutie niet helemaal logisch is omgegaan met grondstoffen, energiebronnen en afval zijn er spannende tijden aangebroken. Iedereen claimt – terecht of onterecht- bezig te zijn met duurzaamheid en het Cradle to Cradle principe alsof het allemaal nieuw is wat we ontdekken. De natuur heeft er echter al miljoenen jaren over gedaan om de zaken goed en in balans te regelen, en op die kennis en ervaring is de wetenschap Biomimicry gebaseerd.

While we all finally start realizing that since the industrial revolution we have not handled our natural and energy resources and waste products very sensibly, exciting times have arrived. Everyone claims –rightly so or wrongfully- to be looking at sustainability and the cradle to cradle principle, as if we have discovered (sliced bread for the first time) something totally new. Nature (regardless of how it got there) seems to have sorted itself out very well and keeps things perfectly balanced, and on this knowledge Biomimicry bases its science.

Buitenschoolse kunsteducatie is kunsteducatie buiten het reguliere lesprogramma op primair-en voortgezet onderwijsscholen. Hoewel binnen- en buitenschoolse kunsteducatie elkaar steeds meer gaan overlappen. Als bevoegd docent heb je verschillende mogelijkheden:
Musea en theater- en dansgezelschappen.
Veel musea besteden aandacht aan educatieve programma’s die aansluiten bij de lopende tentoonstelling of de vaste collectie. Vaak hebben ze een aparte educatie-afdeling. Theater en dansgezelschappen maken vaak een lesprogramma rondom hun voorstellingen. Als afgestudeerd docent in een kunstvak kun je educatieve rondleidingen geven of workshops verzorgen voor schoolklassen of individuele bezoekers. Vaak doe je dit op freelance basis.
Centra voor de kunsten
Er zijn in Nederland ongeveer 200 centra voor de kunsten: muziekscholen, creativiteitscentra en instellingen waar aanbod is in alle kunstdisciplines. Vaak trekken deze instellingen een heel breed publiek. Bij deze instellingen kun je aan de slag als docent of consulent in jouw vakgebied. Centra voor de kunsten bieden lessen en cursussen aan, maar ontwikkelen ook steeds meer programma’s en activiteiten voor het onderwijs.
Je eigen project aanbieden
Wanneer je een goed idee hebt voor een kunsteducatief project, maar je hebt geen werkgever, presenteer je project dan aan verschillende scholen of kunstencentra.
Samenwerkingsprojecten
Er is veel vraag naar projecten waarbij een samenwerking wordt aangegaan tussen verschillende kunstdisciplines. Je kunt bijvoorbeeld een compagnon zoeken die een ander specialisme heeft. Of je plan voorleggen aan een museum, muziekcentrum of theatergezelschap. Deze staan vaak open voor nieuwe ideeën, maar bedenk dat ze meestal al een uitgebreid programma hebben.
Zoek naar vernieuwend aanbod
Er is veel aanbod op het gebied van kunstprojecten. Wanneer je een project wilt opzetten, doe dan onderzoek naar soortgelijke projecten. Wellicht is er al een project dat hetzelfde aanbiedt als het jouwe. Je maakt de meeste kans op een opdrachtgever wanneer je een project aanbiedt dat vernieuwend is en buiten de gebaande paden gaat.
Subsidie aanvragen
Wanneer je project aan bepaalde criteria voldoet kun je subsidie aanvragen. Je kunt hiervoor terecht bij gemeente, overheid of subsidiegevers op het gebied van cultuureducatie. Je hebt dan een opdrachtgever nodig op een school of kunstinstelling. Ook moet je een plan van aanpak schrijven en onderbouwen waarom jouw project een aanvulling is op het al bestaande aanbod. De subsidiegevers hebben vaak speerpunten zoals aanbod voor het primair onderwijs of projecten waarbij kinderen worden bereikt die niet zo snel met kunst in aanraking komen. Als individuele persoon kun je geen subsidie aanvragen.

Many museums concentrate on educational programs which run parallel to the current exhibition or the standard collection. They often have a separate education department. Theatres and dance companies frequently provide an educational program around their productions. As a certified educator in an art form, you can organize educational guided tours or look after workshops for the classroom or individuals. They are often done on a freelance basis.
Art centers
There are around 200 centers for the arts in the Netherlands: Music schools, creativity centers and institutions, where all art disciplines are available. These institutions frequently attract a broad attendance. You can get started with these institutions as a teacher or consultant in your field of expertise. Art centers offer courses and lessons, but increasingly develop programs and activities for primary and secondary education as well.
Offer your own project
When you have a great idea for an art educational project, but you don’t have an employer, present your project to various schools and art centers.
Concurrent projects
There is a lot of demand for projects that run in conjunction with a variety of art disciplines. You may want to look for a partner who is specialized in another field. You can also suggest your plan to a museum, music centre or theatre company. These are often open to new ideas, but do take into consideration that they probably already have an extensive program.
Look for an innovating proposal
There is a lot on offer in the area of art projects. When you set up a project, search for the existence of similar projects. You may find there is already a project that offers the same as yours. You increase your chances of getting a sponsor when you offer a project that is innovative and outside the beaten track.

Applying for funding
When your project meets certain criteria, you can apply for funding. You can obtain this from the local-or state government or from grant providers in the area of cultural education. You will need to have a sponsor at a school or art institution. You also need to have a written plan of action and support your argument as to why your project complements what is currently on offer. The grant givers often have spearheads, like offers to primary education and projects reaching children who rarely come into contact with art. You are not able to apply for a grant as an individual.

A professional network gives you understanding how the system of the field in which you operate is organized. It is an unlimited spring of information. Think carefully about what you would like to achieve with your network. Some guidelines:
Know yourself
Know your long term and short term goals. What do you want to achieve in your profession? What is your vision, in your field of expertise? What do you wish to create? Who would you like to work with and why? Are you aware of your strengths and shortcomings and what makes you stand out against your competition? Ask yourself what image you would like others to have of you. Others can definitely become a future referee.
Know your (job) market
Who is who? What are they doing? What do they endorse? Which projects are running or are being considered? Follow the developments in your field by reading professional literature, digital newsletters and participate in relevant workshops and courses. Know who hold important key positions in the marketplace and have access to what you need. Know the rules and regulations linked to financing and promotion of projects.
Network membership
Membership of a professional organization supplies a wealth of information and is useful to meet colleagues. They organize theme-nights, network drinks and frequently offer you support in setting up your own business. Remember the alumni societies of your college. Also join a digital network: this is a relatively anonymous source of information, where you can (temporarily) set up a network around a relevant subject.
Network links
Make sure others can profit from your network too. Mention the names of others as well, when you feel he or she is perfectly suited for a certain assignment. Networking for others often has a boomerang effect: the other person will remember you more likely when a relevant project is coming up.
Networking is taking action
Networking can be characterized by short, but sometimes powerful, get-togethers. A good networker doesn’t just talk shop. Try to find a common interest in a conversation and move on from there. Active listening is your most valuable skill. You sense the right timing to discuss your latest ideas and emphasize your qualities. A contact promises more for the future. To keep an effective network, you must work to maintain it. Ring, write or chat regularly with created contacts so they will remember you.
