Eroticism has this in common with an addictive drug: that there is a coercive element to its pleasure with which part of us is in complicity, and part not. Thus ever since time began men have been trying to enjoy eroticism without being destroyed by it. Societies, religions can be defined in the way they deal with this conundrum. Polygamy, monogamy with repression, monogamy with affairs, monogamy with prostitutes, serial monogamy. Not to mention individual solutions of great ingenuity, or desperation: Victor Hugo with the door knocked through the wall of his office, to let in a girl each afternoon. Auden's flair for finding call-boys in every town. Picasso who simply refused when wife and mistress demanded he choose between them. Then there is always the hair-shirt of course. But perhaps the thing to remember when you wake up with a life full of fresh paint and tortuous complications is that eroticism wasn't invented for you, nor merely for the survival of the species perhaps, but for a divinity's entertainment. Nothing generates so many opportunities for titillation and schadenfreude as eroticism. Which is why it lies at the centre of so much narrative. How the gods thronged the balconies of heaven to see the consequences of Helen's betrayal! And your friends are watching too. Your antics have put the shine on many a late-night conversation.

On the borders between mythology and history, that wily survivor Odysseus was the first who learnt to trick the gods. And perhaps his smartest trick of all was that of lashing himself to the mast before the Sirens came in earshot. These guns are carried by policemen in short-sleeved shirts and black flak-jackets, alert for terrorists about to blow up Tie-Rack. They are unlikely to confront me directly, but if they do I shall tell them the truth. I shall state my business. I’m planning to stop at Heathrow Airport until I see someone I know. (...)

Astonishingly, I wait for thirty-nine minutes and don’t see one person I know. Not one, and no-one knows me. I’m as anonymous as the drivers with their universal name-cards (some surnames I know), except the drivers are better dressed. Since the kids, whatever I wear looks like pyjamas. Coats, shirts, T-shirts, jeans, suits; like slept-in pyjamas. (...)

I hear myself thinking about all the people I know who have let me down by not leaving early on a Tuesday morning for glamorous European destinations. My former colleagues from the insurance office must still be stuck at their desks, like I always said they would be, when I was stuck there too, wasting my time and unable to settle while Ally moved steadily onward, getting her PhD and her first research fellowship at Reading University, her first promotion.

Our more recent grown-up friends, who have serious jobs and who therefore I half expect to be seeing any moment now, tell me that home-making is a perfectly decent occupation for a man, courageous even, yes, manly to stay at home with the kids. This first phase of implementation will be the "grandfathering", pursuant to Section 110.123, Florida Statutes, of seven existing group plans into the Pretax Benefits Program. Plans with 5,500 or more State employees enrolled were eligible for "grandfathering." Considerable information was provided in DSEI Memorandum No. 92-06, dated February 28, 1992. The epidermis is your skin’s outer layer. The outermost surface of the epidermis, called the stratum corneum, is a protective coating of dead skin cells that forms when fresh cells made in the skin’s deeper layers push their way to the surface, flatten, and die. This layer is thinner than a sheet of tissue paper.

Basal cells, which produce new skin cells, are at the bottom of the epidermis. The epidermis also contains cells called melanocytes. These cells produce melanin, which determines the color of you skin. Although everyone has about the same number of melanocytes, the actual tone of your skin depends on your skin’s unique amount and concentration of melanin, a trait you inherit from your mom and dad.

THE DERMIS (TRUE AGING LAYER OF THE SKIN)
You might call the dermis, which lies under the epidermis and makes up 90 percent of the thickness of your skin, the skin’s nerve center – it’s where much of the skin’s important work is done. The dermis contains nerve receptors, which are sensitive to pressure (soft kisses, the stroke of a feather), temperature, and pain, as well as sweat glands, sebaceous glands (which produce skin-protective oil), hair follicles, and blood vessels.

The dermis also houses fibroblasts, which are responsible for stimulating the production collagen and elastin. Collagen is a plumping agent whose name derived from the Greek words kolla and gennan, which mean “glue” and “to produce,” respectively. Elastin is responsible for the skin’s tightness.

An entomologist, Junpei Niki (played in the film by Eiji Okada), is on an expedition to collect insects that inhabit sand dunes. When he misses the last bus, villagers suggest he stay the night. They guide him down a rope ladder to a house in a sand quarry where a young widow (Kyoko Kishida) lives alone. She is employed by the villagers to dig sand for sale and to save the house from burial in the advancing sand.

When Junpei tries to leave the next morning, he finds the ladder removed. The villagers inform him that he must help the widow in her endless task of digging sand. Junpei initially tries to escape. Upon failing he takes the widow captive but is forced to release her in order to receive water from the villagers.

Junpei becomes the widow's lover. He still, however, desperately wants to leave. One morning, he escapes from the sand dune and starts running while being chased by the villagers. Junpei is not familiar with the geography of the area and eventually gets trapped in some quicksand. The villagers free him from the quicksand and then return him to the widow.

Eventually, Junpei resigns himself to his fate. Through his persistent effort to trap a crow as a messenger, he discovers a way to draw water from the damp sand at night. He thus becomes absorbed in the task of perfecting his technology and adapts to his "trapped" life. The focus of the film shifts to the way in which the couple cope with the oppressiveness of their condition and the power of their physical attraction in spite of — or possibly because of — their situation.
