Dear all!
Can any of you tell me by furnishing some example sentences the difference between "dismantle" and "dismount".
To me they always used to be synonyms:)))
What about machinery? Is it better to "dismantle a machinery/plant or to "dismount"?

MTIA for illuminating on this:)))

Here's the difference Dec 2, 2008

Dismount - to get off a horse or some other animal (donkey, burro, camel)

Dismantle - to take apart, disassemble

Are you influenced by IT? In ES, desmontar is not dismount, it's dismantle. In EN we associate dismounting with horses, typically:-) Dismounting is generally about "getting off" something, dismantle is about "taking apart".

Hello everyone,

This is certainly suitable for the Eng-Eng KudoZ pair.

Best,

Dismount what is mounted on something, dismantle what is made of many parts Dec 3, 2008

You could for example dismount a machine part from its support, or dismount wheels from an axle. Dismantling something means not just removing what kept it standing up, but taking it apart completely.

You can quite vividly imagine a medieval knight dismounting from his horse. If the poor knight were to be dismantled, however, he would literally be taken apart, gallons of blood and all.

Good catch on the IT issue, since I usually "unmount" a disk drive or data partition, when I want to take away from a running computer, but not dismantle it. But that's jargon, eh.

Replace is another tricky word. It needs thinking about.
